Danfoss has introduced its latest Editron electric motor, engineered to supply uninterrupted full power for electric machinery.

Danfoss Power Solutions has launched the Editron EM-PMI540B electric motor, which utilizes synchronous reluctance assisted permanent magnet technology. This versatile motor can operate both as a motor and a generator. Tailored for electric and hybrid drivetrains in demanding applications, such as off-highway machinery and marine vessels, it boasts high efficiency, continuous full-power operation, and the capability to function at high altitudes.

Danfoss has introduced its latest Editron electric motor, engineered to supply uninterrupted full power for electric machinery.

Danfoss Power Solutions has introduced the Editron EM-PMI540B electric motor, an evolution of its highly efficient predecessor, the EM-PMI540A. This new motor delivers an impressive efficiency rate of approximately 96% across its operating range, surpassing traditional induction motors in both performance and compactness. The EM-PMI540B is designed to be smaller and lighter than conventional alternatives, facilitating easier integration into various machinery. It features a robust, compact housing with an ingress protection rating of IP67, ensuring durability in harsh environments.

A standout feature of the Editron EM-PMI540B is its unique continuous power capability. Unlike other electric motors on the market, the EM-PMI540B can deliver non-stop, full power for as long as the duty cycle requires, enhancing machine productivity and streamlining usage by removing the need for complex drivetrain configurations.

The motor's enhancements over the EM-PMI540A include a higher maximum operational altitude of 4,000 meters, made possible through optimized housing design. Additionally, the EM-PMI540B offers greater flexibility with new mounting and shaft options, such as a flange mount, various foot mountings, through-shaft, and spline. This range of options, combined with standardized housing and end shield designs across sizes, further supports easier integration into diverse applications. Modest improvements in motor diameter contribute to these upgrades.

“Our new Editron EM-PMI540B electric motor builds on the popularity and market-leading performance of our PMI540A,” said Fredrik Wigh, Senior Product Manager, electric machines, Danfoss Power Solutions. “To our high efficiency ratings and 24/7 continuous power, we’ve added universal mounting options and a higher altitude rating to meet market demands. These combined features are especially beneficial in mining, harbor material handling, and forestry machinery. But the motors’ high efficiency and smaller size make them ideal for many other electric and hybrid machines, particularly those operating in demanding, rough environments.”

The EM-PMI540B is available in four sizes—T1500, T2000, T3000, and T4000—accommodating continuous torque ratings from 1,500 to 4,000 Nm. The motor series covers power outputs ranging from 119 kW up to 1,000 kW, with speed capabilities from 0 to 4,000 rpm. It is liquid-cooled and designed to function with low coolant flow requirements, tolerating coolant temperatures up to 65°C. This combination of features makes the EM-PMI540B a versatile solution for high-performance electric and hybrid machiner
