At many mobile machinery exhibitions this September, Parker Hannifin displayed a range of technologies designed to enhance the efficiency and power of mining machines. The standout innovation, however, was its new Force Command electrohydraulic linear actuator.

This new electrohydraulic actuator (EHA) incorporates a brushless DC motor with an integrated controller and absolute position sensing, providing users with precise control for even the most demanding applications. Currently in its prototype phase, the actuator is expected to launch next year, according to Erik Larson, Product Sales Manager.

What sets this product apart, according to Larson, is that it is the first EHA to feature a brushless motor rated up to 48 VDC.

"We currently offer hydraulic actuators in sizes ranging from 4 to 8 inches, but this model is a significant upgrade. By adding a brushless motor, we're enabling complete control over the EHA. Users can command specific stroke lengths, adjust speeds, accelerate, and incorporate position sensing," Larson explained.

Adjusting the position is straightforward with the non-contact linear position feedback sensor. Using the HMI touchscreen, users can easily input the desired stroke length. The model on display was capable of reaching strokes up to 12 inches, but the Force Command EHAs can be customized for longer strokes if needed.

“We’ve made significant changes to the construction as well, moving to a new housing design with an aluminum extrusion. This allows us to cut the actuator to the required length, enabling strokes of up to 24 inches,” Larsen explained. “We’ve also upgraded to larger boards, which increases our capacity to handle higher force loads. While our existing products deliver 4,800 lb of force, this new model offers up to 9,400 lb of extension force.”

The Force Command EHA operates on J1939/CANOpen and has been rigorously tested to meet military-grade shock and vibration standards.

“Based on feedback from our distribution partners, we switched to a rod-end style with a number four short male thread, rather than a custom rod end, and we also offer a base mount. It complies with NFPA standards,” Larsen added. “We’re really excited about this product.”

Larsen also highlighted the Force Command EHA’s potential applications in skid steer attachments, construction equipment, and small tractors. “This product is a perfect fit for the push toward electrification. It provides the power density and force that electromechanical actuators currently lack, and it can withstand pressure spikes from obstacles like roots or stumps—something that electromechanical actuators struggle with. We've also built in protective features such as a float mode and a counterbalance circuit for added durability and safety,” he said.
